The Tormentos. 20 years on the crest of the tsunami!
The kings of Buenos Aires surf music: two decades of reverberation with a wild ritual.
Why are we so attracted to surf music? What unique ingredient will this exotic sound cocktail contain to captivate even those of us who have never been able to or, worse, don't even dare to stand on a board in the sea? Could it be that, precisely, this music has the power to transport us to places where we have never truly been?
The Tormentos may not have the answer to such a puzzle. But they are the ones who, from Buenos Aires, Argentina – an electric city, even without a beach – have sweated their bowling shirts most stubbornly and consequently the last 20 years in search of some convincing clue. And it must be said: along the way they emerged with a repertoire, not little revealing, of surf music gems capable of blurring the limits of reality and fantasy, as – we know this well – only the best rock & roll can.
Not all instrumental music with electric guitars is surf. Not even any version of classics like “Pipeline” or “Wipe Out” is. It happens that surfing is a style to tame, not just to execute, much less to reproduce. In that aspect, not coincidentally, this genre?... art? It works just like its reference sport, which consists of dominating the waves or, at least (nothing less), merging with nature, with what is unmanageable by definition, for a few sublime moments, as technical as they are magical.
The Tormentos have the technique and the magic. Perhaps after sealing a pact with some deity in command of the remote tides of the Pacific, the quartet (in its variable line-up over two decades) managed to control the groove of the base and the pulse of the traditional guitars. surfer, from its most subtle inflections to its most beastly audio explosions. Such gifts propelled them internationally: they allowed them to tour Europe, release their music in México o Brasil, participate in festivals in the most remote locations, rub shoulders with international luminaries such asThe Phantom Surfers, Los Straitjackets and the Californian Fuzz King himself Davie Allan (¡!). In other words, The Tormentos knew how to earn their ticket to the narrow red circle of Dick Dale's disciples around the planet.
It is funny how music without words communicates such diverse and clear sensations. In The Tormentos's LPs and concerts there is vertigo and there is intrigue; There can be solace under the influence of an ocean breeze at dusk, just as there can be a hecatomb typical of the most confusing night, with your feet in the sand and your head in other worlds, other sounds.
So… Why do we like The Tormentos so much? What unique ingredient will the exotic sound cocktail behind wonders like “Dragstrip Night” o “Paraíso Natural”? contain?
Perhaps we will be able to decipher it during the ritual with which these four horsemen of reverberance celebrate, in October, their first twenty years on the crest of the tsunami. Or maybe we will never know what the macabre plan was behind all this and we will only have to... enjoy.
